Football was king in Vienna from 7 to 29 June 2008. An incredible 1.2 million fans from around Europe came to the capital city to experience the event live and firsthand.
This enormous number of people posed significant challenges for Wiener Linien. On a “normal” day, we transport around 2.2 million passengers – on match days, this number increased by up to 800,000. As a result, Wiener Linien’s talent for organisation was in considerable demand. We were, however, up to the task, enabling 50,000 stadium visitors to be transported into the city centre within an hour after the final whistle blew.
Intensive preparations were underway for a number of years in the run up to EURO 2008 in order for the fans to stay on the ball. This involved everything from ensuring that work on the U2 line extension to the Prater stadium was completed on time, to setting up signposts and recording public-address messages for foreign visitors, as well as ensuring that help was on hand at the stations and fan zones.
In total, around 7.3 million additional passengers were transported throughout the duration of the 23-day event – a clear success for Wiener Linien.
